The radios chattered 168 hours a week, every week. Everything from technical questions, to locating someone for a meeting, to storm and tornado warnings. There was a special warning every time the Monorail beam was energized, because things were so crazy at the time, they could never tell who or what would be on it. Around opening day, radios were scarce. Everyone wanted to have one, although everyone said they were a pain in the ass. It was a status symbol to walk around with your flashlight and radio on your belt and your hardhat and steel-toed shoes.
But those radios were vital to getting any work done on the site.
There was even a rating system. They knew how long youâd been in Florida by what your call sign was. Conrad was 1 and Martin was 3. Glenn was 11 and Derek was 13. Walt was 20 and Bob Frye was 22.
Chris âstoleâ Electronics 2. It was John Noonanâs call sign, but John had left Florida. When Chris arrived, he decided the number was prestigious and took it.
Ironically, numbers 14 and 15 were assigned to Jamie and Brian. They lived next to each other, both drove silver Datsun B210 wagons and had similar attitudes towards life. People kept on confusing them, and they often answered for each other on the radio since they often worked together. Conrad, who was their supervisor, was never quite sure who was who, even after Jamie and Brian had been there for a year and a half. One day, after he had finally gotten it straight, they switched name tags. That really blew his mind.
There were also humorous accidental and not-so-accidental transmissions. Jamie learned not to toss his radio onto the dash after he and Brian were greeted with strange looks at their next stop â theyâd been broadcasting their opinions of the girls on the site as they drove. And one night, Derek had leaned back in a booth at Dennyâs, keying his radio during a detailed discussion with Sully about the merits of Penthouse Magazine.
Once, Steve, Linda and Glenn went to a lounge in Kissimmee and there was a dreadful cocktail singer. It was 11:30 at night and they decided that the rest of the site should hear it, so they started broadcasting.
